Twelfth Night: A Gender-Bending Journey Shakespeare enjoyed writing passionate plays about young lovers, but, after a while, the formula became exhausted and the Bard was forced to dig deeper, creatively speaking. Twelfth Night is an example of a Shakespearean love tale with a slight twist to keep things interesting. This play was the â€Å"Tootsie† of its time. Twelfth Night takes the audience on a gender-bending journey, while maintaining all the elements of true love throughout. At one point, Olivia wears a disguise in order to take on the traditionally male role of wooing her romantic interest, Cesario, who is also disguised. Although Olivia flirts with Cesario and tells him that his â€Å"scorn† only reveals his hidden love, she is†¦show more content†¦Yet, Olivias attraction seems to stem exactly from the more feminine characteristics like Cesarios beautiful scorn and angry lip (136-137). Olivias words allow an audience, particularly a modern one, to perhaps read her as suspecting or even knowi ng that Cesario is female, yet choosing to love him/her anyway. Olivias description of Cesarios beauty, both here and upon their first encounter, praises typically feminine qualities, but curiously doesnt question Cesarios gender. The comparison of love to guilt tempts the readers mind to wonder if Olivia is guilty about her love for such female attributes. Olivias oath on maidenhood also tempts the reader toward a lesbian reading by hinting that Cesario would also understand maidenhood (141). When Olivia declares that not even wit nor reason(143) can hide her passion, she suggests that she would love Cesario even if it were against logic, as a same sex couple would be. Despite the unacceptability of a same sex romance in Shakespeares time, the hints toward this reading seem visible enough to have been thought of then as well as today. It includes the importance of the teachers, parents, books and other sponsors of literacy and the way they influence ones life and approach towards knowledge, writing and thinking. In this essay I am going to write about my own literacy narrative which will include the sponsors of literacy that influenced me from my childhood. Starting from my childhood I will discuss the earliest phases of my learning, the person who introduced me to the first step of learning, my school life, my favourite teacher and their impact on my knowledge and thinking, the books that had influence on me and the connection of my literacy with these factors. My father was a Drug Enforcement Administrator and my mother was a teacher of mathematics. So, I belong from an upper socio-economic class and it helped me to a better access to the literacy sponsors. In my earliest days of reading and writing, the experience was quiet unpleasant for me. It was my mother who taught me how to read and write and I found it quite monotonous to practice the same things again and again, memorizing and practicing the alphabets, numbers, spellings etc. At the age of about four years, I got admitted in a private school. I used to enjoy my early school life as my teachers were very caring and supportive and I also used to enjoy the company of my classmates. I was interested to participate in various activities of my class. My father was in a high position and it was not possible for him to look at my studies. As my mother was an educator, she used to help me to understand the topics that were difficult to understand or I could not understand in school. I have two elder sisters and they also helped me in my studies when my mother was busy. In spare times my mother used to read stories for us. I had computer at my home and that is why from the very beginning of my education life I had an access to computers. At the age of five years, I developed an interest to learn a foreign language and I got admitted in a language school and started to learn Arabic language. When I grew up a little, I used to read a local Middle Eastern newspaper. It not only enhanced my vocabulary in Arabic but also the current information about the Arabian countries and also improved my general knowledge. I also had an interest in English literature. There were too many books in my home as my mother and my elder sister used to love reading. In my free times I used to go to the study room and read books on different topics. From my early childhood, I was entrapped with an enormous number of texts. As my father is a Drug Enforcement Administrator and my mother was a Med School Student, thus an always had the pressure to read various text materials. Reading stories of Shakespeare was the most interesting part of my life, which influenced my literacy skills on a huge scale. Nevertheless, I faced tremendous challenges in reading and writing from my early life. Some of the people claimed that my basics were weak. Some stated that I did not possess the mentality to learn properly. However, the main problem for me was the lack of guideless to improve my literacy skills. In my early childhood, I was not much interested in studies. However, gradually I started to take the interest in studies as I encountered Professor Smith, my English Language teacher. I began to gain interest in studies on a massive scale as soon as I encountered his influence on my studies. Previously I considered this language very critical and hard to analyze. One of the most complicated parts associated with the English Language was the grammatical section. I was destitute in all aspects of grammar. I had a very limited concept in the chapters of Verb, Tense, Active and Passive Voice, etc. I was utterly depressing and frustrating factor in my life, which I avoided in every instance. Apart from the grammatical section, I was considerably weak in the Writing portions. Since my grammar was poor, I was hardly able to deliver good writing materials. Thus, I always encountered poor marks in the English Language. Nevertheless, the scenario completely changed as I met Professor Smith. F or the first time, I realized that Grammar was not a subject, but a play material. He had a unique teaching style that was entirely different from other teachers. He was very friendly and interacted to the trivial issues of every student. He is very well analyzed my sensitive issue regarding the understanding of the subject. He taught me personally in a very lucid manner. Moreover, he boosted confidence within me for the first time that I have the potential to deliver high quality writing materials. Slowly I gained interest in the subject on an enormous scale. I started to read a newspaper, storybooks and other available literature based on the concept of English Language. Slowly my marks started to magnify and finally resulted in distinction marks. Thus, Professor Smith became my role model for developing The English Language in my life at such a level. Apart from The English Language, I would like to focus towards another subject where I was equally weak from my early childhood, i.e. Arabic. Although I had a personal interest in learning Arabic from my childhood, I always failed as I missed a proper guidance regarding the subject. Most of the teachers, which I met, was highly professional and took petite interest in teaching Arabic. However, as I met Mr. Khan, I came across the fact of learning Arabic in a systematic and logical manner. I was taught from the very syllable associated with the subject. I was taught from the fundamentals of Arabic and was told to read Arabic newspaper and other reading materials on a huge scale. Finally, like English, I found myself to be equally endorsed in both English and Arabic. I would like to thank Professor Smith and Mr. Khan for developing by basics and thereby mounting my future.
